David Ellefson Joined Ugly Kid Joe on Stage for “Ace of Spades” Cover

Aside from Van Halen’s “Running With The Devil,” bassists around the world are practically mandated by law to learn Motörhead’s immortal hit “Ace of Spades.” It’s practically a rite of passage and if you couldn’t just buy a bass, I’d almost say you would have to know how to play that song before you even got to take an instrument home.

All that’s to say that when it came time for ex-Megadeth/Dieth and Kings of Thrash bassist David Ellefson to take the stage with Ugly Kid Joe during a recent performance in Vagos, Portugal, of course that’s the song they opted to play. After all, it’s heavy on the bass and when you have the former bassist of one of the biggest metal bands of all time on your stage, you pick a tune that highlights their capabilities.

But does that choice always have to be that song? Couldn’t they have played literally anything else?

Maybe I’m being too harsh. If you could play the song on the bass, why wouldn’t you want to? “Ace of Spades” fucking rules and if you can play it well, why not do it in front of a crowd?
