SZA Confronts Ex-Boyfriend’s Cheating During London Show: ‘I Was Sad To Come Here’

SZA has never been one to shy away from her feelings — often detailing her heartbreak in her songs — a theme that carried into a recent performance in which she put a former flame on blast for allegedly cheating on her.

On Monday (June 27), the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter displayed her ability to be vulnerable during a concert at London’s O2 Arena, where she aired out her ex’s dirty laundry, alleging he was unfaithful during a previous stay in London Town.

“I never told anybody, but my boyfriend cheated on me in this city before,” SZA began to an uproar of support from concert-goers. “It was terrible. That’s why I was really sad to come here, but you guys made it so much better. Thank you!”

“This song is about my other trash ex-boyfriend,” SZA added before she transitioned to her next song, “Nobody Gets Me,” from her second studio album SOS. In 2022, during a conversation with Hot 97, the 33-year-old revealed the track is about her ex-fiancé and the issues that led to their breakup.

According to SZA, while her ex held her down like no other it wasn’t enough to get them through hard times. “This particular song in entirety is a story about my ex-fiancé and how we went through all these arguments, and we broke up,” she said.

“When we first broke up, it was like terrible, and I just felt like I was gonna be doomed to be in hell for the rest of my life because nobody understood me the way he did, and nobody motivated me the way he did.”

She continued: “He was just this rock in my life that just no longer exists. The stories that I tell in that song about our arguments… That’s the theme on that. I feel like a lot of people don’t understand me but it’s okay.”

Despite not coming out on top in her love life, SZA recently cleaned up at the 2023 BET Awards, where her record-breaking SOS won Album of the Year in a rare tie with Beyoncé‘s Renaissance in the standout category, while her “Kill Bill” mini-movie claimed Video of the Year.

The TDE singer was also crowned Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, fending off stiff competition from Beyoncé, Lizzo, Ari Lennox, Tems, H.E.R. and Coco Jones — the latter of whom was named Best New Artist.
