Lil Durk Sets Up Kanye West Album Showdown After Announcing ‘7220’ Release Date

Chicago, IL – Lil Durk was one of many current rap stars who appeared on Kanye West‘s Donda, helping the album debut atop the Billboard 200 with one of the year’s biggest sales weeks following its release in August 2021.

Six months on from their “Jonah” collaboration, though, and the Chicago natives are set to compete for the top spot on Billboard’s albums chart later this month.

Just weeks after Kanye confirmed Donda 2 along with its February 22 release date, Durkio has revealed his own eagerly anticipated 7220 album will be arriving the same day.

“My album drop same day as YE 2/22/22,” the OTF founder tweeted in the early hours of Monday morning (February 7).

Named after his grandmother’s address a.k.a. “the house it all started in,” 7220 serves as Lil Durk‘s seventh solo album. The 29-year-old rapper has released three singles so far — “Pissed Me Off,” “Lion Eyes” and the Morgan Wallen-assisted “Broadway Girls” — while promising the project will contain “anthems and no skips.”

7220 follows a monster 2021 for Smurk, who released two projects — the chart-topping The Voice of the Heroes with Lil Baby and the OTF compilation Loyal Bros — while appearing on Drake‘s Certified Lover Boy, DJ Khaled‘s Khaled Khaled, Nardo Wick‘s Who Is Nardo Wick? and, of course, Kanye West’s Donda.

All told, Durk logged a staggering 41 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 last year, tied with pop juggernaut Taylor Swift for the most hits by any artist.

Meanwhile, excitement for Donda 2 continues to build as Kanye West has been spotted in the studio with everyone from Travis Scott, Pusha T and Future (who is executive producing the album) to DaBaby, Moneybagg Yo and Beanie Sigel in recent weeks.

The G.O.O.D. Music founder is no secret to album release day showdowns having faced off against 50 Cent, J. Cole and Mac Miller for Billboard supremacy in the past. Rumors suggest Ye was even trying to set up a heavyweight contest with Drake at the height of their feud last summer.

After the repeated delays of Donda, however, it remains to be seen whether the forthcoming sequel will meet its February 22 showdown with Lil Durk’s 7220.
