Leonard Cohen, Marc Bolan, and Lil Baby Documentaries to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2022

New documentaries on Leonard Cohen, T. Rex’s Marc Bolan, Lil Baby, Detroit techno, and cult rapper the D.O.C. will premiere at Tribeca Festival 2022. Lil Baby will also perform after the showing of Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby, which is directed by Karam Gill. The New York festival takes place from June 8 to 19.

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song is a deep dive into the titular song within the context of Cohen’s transformation from a poet to a songwriter, according to press materials. It was directed and produced by Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine. A performance by Judy Collins, Amanda Shires, Sharon Robinson, and a surprise guest will follow the premiere.

Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex follows the tribute album of the same name released in 2020. Directed by Ethan Silverman, the documentary on the glam legend combines archival footage of Bolan with reflections from Gloria Jones, Ringo Starr, Nick Cave, Hal Willner, Joan Jett, David Bowie, and others.

Elsewhere, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Ice Cube, Xzibit, and more feature in the documentary on the D.O.C., which will premiere before a tribute performance by DJ Quik, Das, Kurupt, and surprise guests.

Detroit techno doc God Said Give ’Em Drum Machines, directed by Kristian R. Hill, is also set to premiere, with contributions from Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, and Derrick May, among others.

A video for Little Simz and Obongjayar’s song “Point and Kill,” which Obongjayar scripted for director Ebeneza Blanche, will also premiere at the festival. Lucy Dacus’ “Hot & Heavy” video—self-directed alongside Marin Leong and Jordan Rodericks—will get its festival premiere. Documentaries on May Pang and Sinéad O’Connor will also play at Tribeca Festival 2022.
