Ice Spice Says the 1975’s Matthew Healy Apologized to Her After Offensive Podcast Appearance

In a new interview with Variety, Ice Spice, discussed Matthew Healy of the 1975’s controversial appearance on the Adam Friedland Show podcast. “When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused,” she said of the episode, which featured hosts Adam Friedland and Nick Mullen making racist remarks about the rapper and imitating her imagined accent, based on their perception of her racial background, as Healy laughed.

“Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some shit like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care. But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”

Healy’s guest appearance on The Adam Friedland Show was published in February, but has since been removed from most major podcast platforms. During a 1975 concert in New Zealand in April, Healy told the crowd that he “can take it too far sometimes in front of too many people” and said, “I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”
