DMX’s Verzuz Challenger Snoop Dogg Shares Vivid Memories Of Dark Man X

A number of heartfelt tributes and stories about DMX have poured in since the Yonkers legend’s passing last Friday (April 9). Snoop Dogg joined Fallon as a guest on Monday night (April 12) and reflected on his first time meeting X, which inspired the title of “Get at Me Dog,” and their celebratory Verzuz battle in July 2020.

Snoop believes he met DMX back in 1994 before most of the world even knew who The Dog was. During their encounter, which involved a trip to the studio, the West Coast deity told DMX before leaving, “Get at me, dog.”

X would remember those few words, which ended up becoming the name of his major-label debut single in 1998. DMX retold the story during his Battle of The Dogs Verzuz matchup last year.

“I was like, ‘Get at me, dog,’” Snoop recalled. “And he was like, ‘I took that and I made that into my song ‘Get at Me Dog,’ ’cause the way you got at me and said that. So that night inspired him to create that song, ‘Get at Me Dog,’ which was one of his, you know, biggest hood records that he put out.”

Snoop Dogg is extremely grateful he got to share that moment in front of the Hip Hop world with DMX and give the Ruff Ryders rapper his flowers on the Verzuz stage.

“We had God in the building with us that night,” Snoop explained. “That makes me feel good about DMX’s transition to know that he’s off to a better place and he’s finally got his angel wings.”

He continued to celebrate DMX’s legacy, “We keep Hip Hop alive. Legends never die, their soul will continue to bless the world and he was a great spirit who always looked out for everybody. He always prayed for everybody.”
