Thierry Mugler, Designer Behind Iconic David Bowie and Beyoncé Looks, Dies at 73

Thierry Mugler, the French fashion designer behind the Mugler fashion line, died on Sunday. His death was confirmed on his Instagram page and by the Mugler brand. He was 73.

Widely beloved and influential in the world of fashion, Mugler’s designs were worn by some of the biggest stars in music. David Bowie wore a Mugler dress on Saturday Night Live in 1979. Mugler’s designs were worn by stars like Diana Ross, Madonna, George Michael, and many others. 

Following his retirement from the Mugler brand in 2003, his archives supplied some of the most iconic looks in contemporary pop music. Lady Gaga wore a vintage Mugler outfit in the 2010 “Telephone” video, and at the 2011 Grammys, exited an egg wearing a Mugler dress. Cardi B, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Katy Perry have all worn outfits from the Mugler archives in recent years. In 2009, Mugler served as the artistic director for Beyoncé’s “I Am…” world tour; he created the costumes and played a major role in the show’s overall production.
